Interlibrary Loan

You can order books, book chapters, and articles that we do not own through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).  Book chapters and articles generally come electronically and can get here in a few days.  Print books are snail-mailed and can take a week or two to arrive.

You can also have book chapters that we do own scanned and sent to you by using the "Document Delivery" (DD) service.   Both services are available through the green ILL/DD button on the Howe Library homepage.

Book Searching

An overview of your city's history is a good way to begin the city case study assignment.  Overview information is generally found in books, not articles, because of a book's broader scope.  Finding one or two good books or book chapters on your city can provide you with a solid background for your project.

In CatQuest

Use the "Advanced Search" in CatQuest, and, in the drop-down menu select "Library Catalog" to search only books and movies.

Searching with subject headings can be very useful for this type of searching.  Try changing the search box drop-down to "Subject" and searching with:

Name of City -- History

Your search should look like the one below.

In WorldCat

WorldCat searches books from libraries around the world.  It's a great way to find out what books have been written about a topic.  Use the "Advanced Search" feature (the toggle buttons to the right of the search box) and search as you would in CatQuest.

If we do not own a title, you can request that we get the book for you from another library.  This service is called Interlibrary Loan and the portal is through the green "ILL/DD" button on the Howe Library homepage.
