Data Management Guide

Data Citation: Overview

Data citation is highly recommended to provide reliable access to specific datasets, to provide credit to the data producers, and to fulfill some publisher requirements.

Citing Data

Include in your citation, when known:

  • Author/Principal Investigator: the person(s) or institution responsible for compiling the data
  • Title of data source
  • Year of publication
  • Edition or version number
  • Publisher or distributor: if data are archived, include the producer/distributor and location
  • URL, identifier (DOI), or other access location

Citation Software

Using citation software? No problem! Create entries for datasets as follows:

  • Endnote and Zotero: Use the reference type for "dataset."
  • Mendeley: Use the "unspecified" reference type.
