ORCID at UVM

This guide describes what an ORCID iD is and how to create and use one.

ORCID Frequently Asked Questions

What are ORCID iDs?

ORCID iDs are a form of persistent identical identifier. It is a unique, open, digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher with the same or a similar name to you. You can use your ORCID iD throughout your whole career -- even if your name changes or you move to a different organization.

Who can register for an ORCID iD?

Anyone can register for a free ORCID iD. They are most useful for active researchers who want to keep track of their research outputs, but you do not need an official affiliation to apply for one. In fact, you may be required to register for an iD if you are submitting to some journals or applying for research funding with some organizations, such as the NIH.

Will ORCID sell my data?

ORCID is a trusted, community-driven, not-for-profit organization that will never sell your data, nor can it be bought by a commercial entity. It is run by and for researchers and supported by research institutions such as the University of Vermont. For more information about ORCID's trustworthiness, see the ORCID Trust Program website.

Is my information in ORCID visible to everyone?

You control the visibility of your data in ORCID.

How can I check to see if I've already got an ORCID iD?

If you try to register with an email address that is already attached to a record in the system, you will be asked to log in rather than to register a new iD. You can also search the ORCID registry by using the Advanced Search function before you register for a new ORCID iD if you think that you might already have been assigned one.

Should I have both a personal and an institutional ORCID?

No, you should have only one ORCID ID. If you previously signed up for an ORCID iD at the request of a publisher or other institution, just continue to use that iD. Do not register for another one.

What should I do if I have two ORCiD IDs?

If you discover that you have duplicate accounts, contact ORCID support and ask them to help you resolve the problem. Because ORCiD identifiers are designed to be persistent, obsolete identifiers are deprecated rather than being deleted. If someone tries to access a deprecated record, they will be redirected to the primary active record.

Should I just register again if I can't remember my ORCID password?

If you can't log into ORCID, please use the Forgotten Password link to reset your password. If you no longer have access to the email address you used to create your ORCID record, contact the ORCID support team for help regaining access. Don't create another iD because duplicate ORCID iDs will cause problems in maintaining your record.

Do I have to do anything with my ORCID iD if I leave UVM?

Your ORCID iD belongs to you, so you keep the same iD throughout your career. If you move to a different post or institution you can update your ORCID account with the new information.

Can I authorize someone else to edit my ORCID account? How do I do that?

Yes, you can give other people the rights to edit your ORCID account. Here's how to do that:

  • Log into your ORCID account
  • Click on your name in the upper right hand corner
  • Click on the "Trusted Parties" option
  • Scroll down to the "Trusted Individuals" section
  • Search for the person's ORCID account
  • Click the "Add a a trusted individual" button for the person you want to authorize

Please see the "Add a trusted individual to your account" page on the ORCID support site for more information.
