A guide to the different kinds of research required for the Prior Art Review.

Citing references in IEEE Style

Cite your in-text and bibliographical references in IEEE style. Use a citation management program like Zotero - see the Organize your research page - or (if you enjoy formating citations manually) follow the IEEE Reference Guide.

How to cite a patent

The format for a patent citation depends on the style (IEEE, APA, etc). Whichever style is used, the citation usually needs this information:

  • assignee (owner)
  • title
  • country/jurisdiction
  • status ("Patent" or "Patent Application")
  • number
  • date of award (or application)

Examples in IEEE style:

  • [1] M. Myers, "Golf club head with adjustable center of gravity," U.S. Patent 8 696 491 B1, April 15, 2014.

  • [2] R. F. Gazdzinski, "Portable computerized wireless payment apparatus and methods," U.S. Patent 8 371 503 B2, February 12, 2013.

How to cite a standard

The format for a standard citation depends on the style (IEEE, APA, etc). Whichever style is used, the citation usually needs this information:

  • Issuing agency
  • Standard number
  • Standard title
  • Publication date
  • Specific version (if applicable)

Examples in IEEE style:

  • Test method for density or relative density of engine coolant concentrates and engine coolants by the hydrometer, ASTM Standard D 1122, 2016.

  • Fire resistant tanks for flammable and combustible liquids, UL Standard 2080, 2000.
