FTS 133: Real to Reel - Ellis (Fall 2022)

Use the Library Catalog to Search for Books in the Library

The Library Catalog locates books, journals (not articles), microfilm, dvds, cds, and U.S. documents (1976->) owned by the UVM Libraries. There are two versions of the catalog:
CATQuest version and the Classic Library Catalog. Each version has its advantages and disadvantages.
Because the CATQuest search box is front and center on the Library homepage, find instructions for using the CATQuest version below. (If something confuses you, use the Classic Library Catalog. To find this link on the Library homepage, click the "Research" link at the top of the page and find the link in the "FIND" column.)

Search for Books using the Library Catalog - CATQuest

In the library catalog (both versions) there are two ways to search for books (and films). Both methods are effective under certain circumstance, so it's often best to use both.

  1. Use Library of Congress Subject Headings in the Browse search mode to locate books on your topic. These subject headings are found in the "Full  Record."  When you perform a subject heading search, only the Subject Heading field is searched.
  2. Use your own words (Keyword search) in the Advanced Search mode to locate books on your topic. The computer searches for your words anywhere in the record, not just the subject heading field. While this type of search yields more results, many of the books will not be relevant to your topic. NOTE: you can combine words in a Library of Congress Subject Heading with your own words.

Tip! To view the most recently published books at the top of your list of results, sort by "Date-newest" instead of Relevance or Title.

Tip! Since you may find e-books while your're searching the library catalog part of CATQuest, I strongly recommend that before you access CATQuest you log in through ezproxy. Once you enter CATQuest "Advanced Search" or "Browse" mode, you should also Sign in (upper-right of screen) to access the most content available.

Search for Books - Subject Headings

Use Library of Congress Subject Headings* in the  Library Catalog to locate books on your topic. Click image below (live link!) to be brought to the Browse search function in CATQuest.

Suggested Subject Headings
Type (or copy and paste) the subject heading in the search box.

NOTE: Some filmmakers are so famous that entire books are written about them. People may be searched as subjects. In the search box, type:   first name last name    e.g., flaherty robert

  documentary films
(list of documentary films owned by the library)
  documentary films history and criticism
documentary films production and direction  documentary films great britain history and criticism
documentary films political aspects  documentary films united states
 * ( look for subheadings such as historyhistory and criticismdistribution )

Search for Books with Keywords (Advanced Search)

Use a Keyword search in the CATQuest Advanced Search to search topics that are complex with multiple concepts or if you are unsure of the Library of Congress Subject Heading. A keyword search finds the term anywhere in the library catalog record. When you do a keyword search, be sure to look at the subject headings used to describe this topic and then also search by the correct Library of Congress Subject Heading.

Below is a sample search
(limit entire search to "Library Catalog." Select "Books" from the list in the Resource Type category)

Browse the Stacks

If you're in the library and you find a useful book in the stacks, browse in that area to discover other books that might be useful.

When viewing a full book record in CATQuest, scroll down to the bottom of the screen where you can perform a virtual browse. You will see books that are shelved before and after the book you found.

Check Out a Book

Bring book/s to the Circulation Desk, located next to the library's entrance. Your student ID serves as your library card. The loan period for undergraduate students is 4 weeks.  Check out as many books as you need.

Renew Books

Books that are not overdue may be renewed online.

The link Renew a Book is on the Library Homepage, under the category Services.

Recall Books

If a book you need is checked out, you may Recall the book from the person who has it. The Library will contact you when the book is returned, and will be held for you at the Circulation Desk.
