About UpToDate: Remote Access

How and why to use UpToDate

UpToDate Anywhere

If you create a free UpToDate account while on the UVM or UVMMC network, you can then use that account to access UpToDate from any web browser for 90 days.  Just log in from our network once every 90 days, and the rest of the time you can log in directly without having to worry about remembering your UVM credentials or logging into the Remote Gateway.

This same UpToDate account allows you to use UpToDate's mobile app, and to earn CME credits just by doing searches.

Connecting from our network

The first time you use UpToDate Anywhere, and once every 90 days after that, you'll need to be on the UVM network.  There are several ways to do that.

These instructions will assume you have a UVM netID or are on the UVMMC employee network.  If you aren't, check our Connecting to Library Resources guide for alternative ways to get access.  Once you are on the UVMMC Remote Gateway or the LCOM Remote Access Gateway, come back and follow these instructions.

Visit the Dana Library homepage: https://dana.uvm.edu and click on the green UpToDate button:

If prompted, sign in with your UVM netID and password:

Note: if you are on the UVMMC employee network at the hospital (but not the UVMMC guest network or at another UVMMC location), you should not see this screen: it should just log you in automatically.

If you don't have a UVM netid so can't get past this screen, try one of the alternative options at https://researchguides.uvm.edu/connecting.

You should be taken to UpToDate. Be sure that it shows University of Vermont Medical Center (or your own name) at the top to show that it recognizes you're accessing our subscription.

If you are coming from UVMMC or signed in through the proxy, you will see .ezproxy.uvm.edu in the URL. This is how it recognizes you as being on our network when you physically aren't.  If you are physically at UVM or are using the VPN or the LCOM Remote Access Gateway, you may not see the .ezproxy.uvm.edu.  As long as you do see the University of Vermont Medical Center, that's okay.

If you are a first-time user, click on Register and complete the form to create an UpToDate username and password:

If you already have an UpToDate account, click Log In and sign in with that username and password.

If prompted, read and Accept the license and privacy policy.

You should get a popup saying that you have successfully verified your affiliation with UVM/UVMMC, and that your account is now active for UpToDate Anywhere for 90 days.

You're all set!

Using UpToDate Anywhere for Remote Access

Now that you have established an account from within our network, you can use it from anywhere.

Go to https://www.uptodate.com in any web browser.

Notice that it doesn't mention University of Vermont Medical Center (or your name) and has a Subscribe button.  These show that it's not recognizing you and you won't have access to UpToDate.  If you do a search and try to read something, you'll get a message prompting you to log in after the first few paragraphs:

Click Log In to sign in with your existing UpToDate account.  (You can't register for a new account at this point: you need to be on our network to do that.)

Login form when accessed from outside the network.

After logging in, your name should appear at the top of the screen to show that you have been recognized, and you can access the content just as if you were on campus.

That's it. Just remember to log in from within our network at least once every 90 days to keep your UpToDate Anywhere access active.
