Using Timelines to Teach and Create Dynamic Online Presentations: VLC 2019

Examples of Timelines Created with Timeline JS

The Home as Seen in The Ladies' Home Journal -- Created during a 70 minute session with graduate students enrolled in a course on the history of the home. This particular lesson was devoted to learning to use advertisements from magazines in HathiTrust as primary sources to better understand the material culture of homes in the US during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Students were introduced to HathiTrust, shown the spreadsheet, and asked to each add two or three items to the timeline during their explorations. This timeline makes use of the "Group" (categorize) feature in Timeline JS. After completing the timeline we discussed what they ahd seen and what broader themes such as gender, race, and class, had emerged through their examination of the advertisements. The Bicycle a Shifting Symbol (Amber Vaillancourt) -- this timeline was created by a UVM student enrolled in a historical geography course on the history of childhood. This timeline was one piece of a larger digital project and explores the changing meaning and symbols of bicycles in the US from the 1860s to 1920s.
