REL 234/202: Buddhism in Sri Lanka - Trainor (Fall 2020)

Getting Your Hands on the Books and/or Book Chapters

If you're in the library and you find a useful book in the stacks, browse in that area to discover other books that might be useful.

When viewing a full book record in CATQuest, scroll down to the bottom of the screen where you can perform a virtual browse. You will see books that are shelved before and after the book you found.

During the Fall semester, the library is open but with limited hours. Please check the Hours to make sure it's open before making the journey. If you don't need the entire book, but just a book chapter in it, consider requesting it through the Library's Document Delivery Service. This service provides pdf scans of print materials (book chapters and articles) owned by the UVM Libraries. The Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (aka ILL/DD) page provides more detailed information about this service. Additionally, view this brief video ("Requesting items owned in print through Document Delivery"). NOTE:  You must register for the ILL/DD service first. View this brief video for instructions on how to register.

Curbside Pickup (How to....)

Monday-Friday, 8 am - 10 am, UVM affiliates (students, staff, and faculty) may pick up Howe Library books, books obtained through Interlibrary Loan, and media equipment and DVDs by appointment at a designated area adjacent to the Howe Library front entrance. Howe Library Circulation and Multimedia Services staff will communicate with borrowers via email (or phone) to locate requested materials and coordinate pickup and drop-off times.

Bring book/s to the Circulation Desk, located next to the library's entrance. Your student ID serves as your library card. The loan period for undergraduate students is 4 weeks.  Check out as many books as you need.

Renew Books

Books that are not overdue may be renewed online.

The link Renew a Book is on the Library Homepage, under the category Services.

Recall Books

If a book you need is checked out, you may Recall the book from the person who has it. The Library will contact you when the book is returned, and will be held for you at the Circulation Desk.

  • ANDnarrow your search down by combining two or more terms. All terms must be present.
Example: monks  and buddhist and sri lanka

OR - broaden your search by combining synonyms or alternative forms of words. Any of the words must be present. Write down any commonly used alternatives to/synonyms for your search terms and connect them with or
    Example: monks or monasticism

  • NOT - excludes terms from a search; narrows and focuses a search   Example: buddhism  not mahayana

  • TRUNCATION (aka wildcard) - symbol used at the end of a word or root word to retrieve variant word endings, including plurals; makes a search more efficient by decreasing the number of searches.    example: monast* retrieves: monastery, monasteries, monasticism, monastic
Many (not all) databases use the * as the truncation symbol. Check the online Help in each database to find which symbol is used.

  • Put the search together. Make your search more efficient by using the "and"   "or" connectors in one search.
    Example:

    buddhis*
    and
    monast* OR monk*
    and
    "sri lanka"

Search for Books with Keywords (Advanced Search)

Use a Keyword search in the CATQuest Advanced Search to search topics that are complex with multiple concepts or if you are unsure of the Library of Congress Subject Heading. A keyword search finds the term anywhere in the library catalog record. When you do a keyword search, be sure to look at the subject headings used to describe this topic and then also search by the correct Library of Congress Subject Heading.

Below is a sample search
(limit entire search to "Library Catalog." Select "Books" from the list in the Resource Type category)
