Vermont Land Surveyors Records

A guide to surveyors' collections available in the Silver Special Collections Library.

Overview

Silver Special Collections holds the records of six surveyors or survey companies. The survey records include maps, drawings, and field notebooks. The records document town boundaries and lots, individual properties, roads, and utilities such as water and sewer lines. The surveyors worked mainly in northern Vermont from the late eighteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries.

For each collection, this guide briefly describes the content, the geographic coverage, and the time periods represented. The guide provides information about finding aids (collection inventories). Most importantly, the guide indicates where the records are stored and provides notes on how researchers can gain access to the collections. Because a number of the collections are stored offsite, researchers may need to contact Special Collections public services staff several days in advance, by emailing uvmsc@uvm.edu or calling 656-2138.
