Biography

A guide to print, subscription electronic, and free Web resources about people.

Home--Biography

Need information about a person?

Click the tabs at left to see lists of credible biographical information sources (both print and electronic) made available by Howe Library.

This guide does not list general sources that also include biographical entries. Please see the box below to find those.

The Icon icon indicates a licensed database that can be accessed outside the library only by UVM affiliates (see "Connect off campus" instructions at left). All users, including those not affiliated with UVM, may use these resources from a computer within the library.

Can't find the person in the sources listed on this guide?

Try these two options:

1.  Consult a subject-specific encyclopedia. They often have entries about people. Ask a librarian at the Reference Desk to recommend an encyclopedia, or find one by searching the Library Catalog.

2.  Locate an individual biography of the person by searching the Library Catalog.

Connect off campus

Links from the UVM Libraries websites in CATQuest, "Journal Titles" list, "Research Databases" list, subject guides, etc. will automatically generate a UVM log-in screen for you to enter your NetID and password (UVM affiliates only).

Alternatively, UVM affiliates can access subscription online resources off campus by using AnyConnect VPN. Instructions for using VPN.

If you are unable to connect to a resource from the Libraries website
Please report the issue or talk with a librarian at the Reference Desk. You may also try connecting to the resource via the AnyConnect VPN with sslvpn2.uvm.edu/full. This will enable you to reach resources that are unavailable for proxy connection due to an issue with the proxy server. See instructions above.

Nonaffiliates must come to the library to use subscription online resources.
