This guide is designed to help you find and evaluate scholarly information on Tolkien (1892-1973) and Lord of the Rings (e.g., v. 1. The Hobbit -- v. 2 The Fellowship of the Ring -- v. 3. The Two Towers -- v. 4. The Return of the King).

  1. Starting Points: Background Information: Individual subject encyclopedias and companions about literatures in English, literary terms, and biography.
  2. Modernity & Modernism: essays from encyclopedias and dictionaries; books about modernity and modernism
  3. Books: Library Catalog part of CATQuest. Guidance on searching the catalog for books in the library. Information on checking out and renewing books.
  4. Call Numbers & Subject Headings: Directions on how to find books in the Bailey/Howe Library main circulating collection (2nd and 3rd floors).
  5. Articles: Multidisciplinary and subject-specific databases for locating articles in scholarly journals and magazines. Sub-tab 4A. - Find the Article: sample citation unpacked; how to obtain an article when it's not full-text in the database.
  6. Keyword Searching: Help with developing keywords for a topic, using variant spellings and synonyms, creating a keyword search.
  7. Writing in Literature:  Differences between literature criticism and book reviews; tips on writing a literary analysis.
