Data Management

Citing Data

Data citation is highly recommended to provide reliable access to specific datasets, to provide credit to the data producers, and to fulfill some publisher requirements.

Include in your citation, when known:

  • Author/Principal Investigator: the person(s) or institution responsible for compiling the data
  • Title of data source
  • Year of publication
  • Edition or version number
  • Publisher or distributor: if data are archived, include the producer/distributor and location
  • URL, identifier (DOI), or other access location

Citation Software

Using citation software or style guides? In Endnote use the reference type for "dataset." If you're using Mendeley or Zotero, make do by using other more generic reference type templates and fill in the essentials for your dataset.
