Zotero

Zotero is an online research tool that allows you to collect, organize, cite, and share resources. It is available as both a browser plug-in and as stand alone software. It works by automatically sensing content in your browser, whether you are looking at a journal article in a database or browsing web content through Google. Free download.

RefBin

RefBin is an information management tool designed at UVM specifically to work with medical literature and PubMed. It allows you to automate searches, retrieve new articles, and organize and describe literature in a way that makes sense to you. You can also save PDFs and share with others. RefBin is $5 per month for individual academic subscribers.

 

Papers

Originally created for Mac computers, Papers 3 for Mac is a desktop reference management tool with an iTunes look and feel. It allows you to capture and organize citations and PDFs. Create bibliographies and cite references in MS Word by using Magic Manuscripts, a citation tool included in Papers. Papers cost $79, student discounts and a free trial are available. ReadCube is its sister application and is available for PCs, Android products, and as a web-based tool.

 

Mendeley

Mendeley is an account-based desktop and web-based software program that is used to manage and share research papers, discover research data, and collaborate online. Mendeley automatically imports metadata from PDFs, and will import web documents and research papers via a browser bookmarklet. Information can easily be organized into folders, and can be shared with other Mendeley users. The software links with Microsoft Word and OpenOffice to produce citations and bibliographies in all standard styles, including APA, Chicago, MLA, AMA, and CSE.

ReadCube

ReadCube is a tool for capturing, organizing and reading PDFs. It offers a browser plug-in to help you collect citations and PDFs during your online searching. ReadCube's PDF reader provides many mark-up and note taking tools. It also allows you to sync across all of your devices and the Web. You can cite references from your ReadCube library in Word 2016 documents with SmartCite. Available as both free and paid versions. Free trial available.

F1000Workspace

F1000 Workspace is a reference manager that allows you to discover, read, annotate, write and share scientific research. This product is put out by Faculty of 1000 (now called F1000), a publisher of services for life scientists and clinical researchers. It contains a PDF reader that allows you to annotate and take notes. You can access your library across devices. Free and paid versions.
