Learn how to find images and other visual materials to use for research projects, understand the circumstances in which you may use images created by other people, and learn how to properly cite and give credit for the work of others.

Citing Images & Visual Materials in APA Style

When using images and other visual materials you need to provide information about the 1) permission (rights) to use the item and 2) a formal citation.

STATEMENT ON PERMISSION/RIGHTS

Place the statement on permission/rights in the caption for the image directly below the image and either link to the license or write out the type of permission that the creator has given.

APA CITATIONS FORMAT FOR IMAGES

Place the citation at the end of your blog post or other work under the heading References. If you are using your own image you do not need to include a date of retrieval or URL.

APA CITATIONS FOR GOOGLE MAPS

When using Google Maps in web sites the recommended method is to embed the map. Consult Google's instructions for embedding maps for more details.

Google Maps has a built in function for the creation of short URLs and using these will make your citations easier to read.

Image without a title

When no title is provided, use "untitled" in lieu of the title and place a descriptive phrase within the brackets used to describe type of work.
