ASCI 001: Introductory Animal Sciences - Kerr/Kinghorn (Fall 2017): Culling Elephants

Topic #7 Culling Elephants

Topic background: Some African governments cull problem elephants as the population is exceeding sustainable numbers, interfering with crop yields and causing general destruction and havoc in the communities where they transition through. Here is the classic wildlife vs. human debate. Do we have the right to slaughter another species because it interferes with our livelihood?

  • Pro: African governments have the right to cull problem elephants when they negatively affect crop yields and cause general destruction in areas where humans have lived for centuries.
  • Con: African governments do not have the right to cull problem elephants even though they may negatively affect crop yields and cause general destruction in areas where humans have lived for centuries.
