Why and how to use Early English Books Online (EEBO)

Why use this resource? Provides searchable access to full-length literary and historical works in all subjects printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America, as well as works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700, listed in four collections:  Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640), Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700) and their revised editions, the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661) collection, and the Early English Books Tract Supplement.

What's in this resource? Full-text books, pamphlets, newspapers, sermons, statutes, ballads and carols, etc. Images may be searched within the documents.


Dates of Coverage 1473-1700
Truncation or Wildcard * substitutes for one or more characters at the end of a word or root word
? substitutes for a single character any place in a word (beginning, within, at the end)
Note: it is not possible to use variant spelling functionality in combination with truncation and wildcard operators.
